The Cutaway: Prototyping Process

The Cutaway is part cozy eating and part mold translation experiment. In prototyping, the bowl evolved from plaster mold and slip-cast part to a second plaster mold and cork part. It's all a game of positives and negatives that ends with two perfectly mated parts and one coherent form.

The cork granules are mixed with adhesive and packed into a mold that is put under extreme pressure in a hydraulic press.

The mold produces a block that fits perfectly around the porcelain blank for final shaping.
